The State of Pará reaffirms its prominent position in the national production of açaí, a fruit originating from the humid soils of the Amazon and valued for its nutritional properties and varied uses in the culinary and cosmetic industry. In 2022, Pará was responsible for 90.4% of national production, totaling 1.7 million tons, consolidating its leadership and standing out in the global market.
The economic importance of açaí for the region is undeniable, and recent studies by the Amazon Foundation for the Support of Studies and Research (Fapespa) reinforce this relevance. In the Technical Note “Açaí Economic Situation 2024”, the notable growth in Pará production and its significant contribution to the local economy were highlighted, in addition to exploring new data on the municipalities most specialized in the cultivation of the fruit.
Açaí, in addition to its nutritional qualities, has also proven valuable in the form of biochar, a byproduct of açaí production with environmental and agricultural benefits. Biochar is a type of charcoal produced by the pyrolysis of biomass, such as açaí seeds, under conditions of low oxygenation. This material has the ability to improve soil quality, increase water and nutrient retention, and sequester carbon, contributing to the mitigation of climate change.
The production of açaí biochar is an example of how waste from the açaí industry can be transformed into valuable resources, promoting sustainability and the circular economy. This byproduct has the potential to be used in carbon credit projects, such as those developed by Amazon Connection Carbon (ACC), which is at the forefront of sustainability project management in the Amazon.
Pará, with its vast açaí production and innovation in the use of biochar, not only strengthens its position in the market, but also demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and economic development in the region. This model can serve as inspiration for other producing regions, promoting more sustainable and economically viable agricultural practices.
Açaí and biochar symbolize the promising future of the Pará economy, combining tradition and innovation. Pará's commitment to sustainability and the valorization of Amazonian natural resources places the state as a leader not only in the production of açaí, but also in the implementation of practices that benefit the environment and society.
