Climate Threat: North Atlantic Ocean Circulation Could Collapse by the End of the Century.

A study conducted by researchers from the University of Copenhagen has raised a concerning alert about the circulation of the Atlantic Ocean waters. According to the research, the ocean currents system known as AMOC could collapse as soon as this century due to climate change. This discovery has been seen as a new call for urgent actions in combating climate change.

The Importance of AMOC: AMOC, or Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, is a crucial system for global climate regulation. It is responsible for distributing heat in the oceans, directly affecting the climate in different regions of the planet. With around 90% of the global heat stored in the oceans, AMOC plays a fundamental role in climate stability.

Collapse Prediction: According to the researchers, AMOC is slower and less resilient, which will lead to a collapse between the years 2025 and 2095. The probability of this collapse happening is 95% by 2095. To prevent this shutdown, it is essential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Consequences of Collapse: The collapse of AMOC can bring severe consequences to Earth's climate. The way heat and precipitation are distributed globally will be affected, resulting in temperature drops in parts of Europe and increased heat in tropical regions of the Southern Hemisphere.

Challenges of Analysis: Despite some criticisms raised about the data used in the study, the researchers highlight that the collapse of AMOC may be closer than previously thought. The abrupt reduction or collapse of AMOC has been identified in events over the past thousands of years, with consequences such as intensified rainfall in the Amazon and northeastern regions of Brazil.

Urgent Actions and Climate Resilience: In light of the study's findings, the need for actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions becomes even more urgent. Climate resilience is essential to address the intense and rapid climate changes that have been observed.

The University of Copenhagen's study on the potential shutdown of AMOC reinforces the importance of awareness and actions for sustainability and combating climate change.

The quest to reduce uncertainties in climate projections and deepen knowledge about the impacts of climate changes is crucial to face future challenges. Ocean preservation and collective actions are crucial to ensure a sustainable future for our planet.
