COP29: First day marks global call for climate action

COP29, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, officially opened with the inauguration of Mukhtar Babayev, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, who now assumes the presidency of the conference. In an event marked by a strong call to action, Babayev emphasized the urgency of increasing global ambitions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the need to unlock climate finance. The president highlighted that the current climate policy scenario points to an increase of up to 3 degrees Celsius in the average global temperature, and stressed the importance of immediate progress to mitigate such forecasts.

Among the main topics discussed, Babayev highlighted the importance of the development and transfer of technologies to developing countries, which are fundamental to addressing climate challenges. According to the president of COP29, this technological cooperation could be one of the differentiators of this conference, with the potential to accelerate climate initiatives in regions most affected by climate change.

COP29 also highlighted the need for concrete progress on energy transition and national adaptation plans. As mentioned in the opening, these plans are essential for each country to make a meaningful contribution, with targets to be achieved by 2025. These goals are seen as critical steps towards sustainable progress by 2030. According to Babayev, “successes and failures will be collective”, highlighting the global and interdependent nature of the fight against climate change.

The state of Pará, represented by its chief executive, has made significant progress in its climate and environmental agenda. As host of the upcoming COP30, Pará has highlighted a series of environmental projects aimed at restoring degraded areas, promoting the bioeconomy and implementing sustainable practices in agricultural production. These initiatives seek to combine the conservation of the Amazon with economic development, generating a positive impact for local communities and for Brazil as a whole.

Amazon Connection Carbon, a company dedicated to sustainability and the trading of carbon credits, is present at COP29 to monitor the events. Represented by Marcelo Souza, communications manager, the company reinforces its commitment to sustainability and the search for innovative solutions to mitigate climate change.
