In Brazil, where 70% of the 80 million metric tons of municipal solid waste generated annually end up in landfills, the technical potential for biogas production is estimated at 120 million cubic meters per day—enough to supply 40% of the country’s electricity demand. Currently, operational projects in 12 states convert waste into energy, generating approximately 500 MW of installed capacity, sufficient to power 1.2 million households.
Challenges: Financing, Technology, and Regulation
The expansion of the biogas sector faces structural obstacles. Biodigesters—ranging from artisanal systems to large-scale industrial plants—require initial investments between R$500,000 and R$5 million, with a financial return that can take up to a decade. For small-scale farmers, maintenance costs—including membrane replacements for purification and impurity control—pose significant financial barriers. Additionally, regulatory gaps exacerbate the issue: Brazil lacks a comprehensive legislative framework to incentivize biomethane injection into the natural gas grid or streamline the sale of surplus energy. In contrast, mature markets have implemented public policies that ensure subsidized tariffs and prioritized grid access for biogas producers.
